Historic Structure Report – Hugh Mercer Apothecary

LOC_FBJ_1927-finished HMA-2955-1020-22-2While studying Historic Preservation at the University of Mary Washington Ms. Schricker studied, measured, and researched the building at 1020 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA, known as the Hugh Mercer Apothecary. This project was the semester-long project of a Building Forensics class taken during her senior year.

Research of this building  was carried out through an entire semester during the course taught by Professor Michael Spencer.  Prerequisite courses to partake in this laboratory class included instruction on building materials and styles as well as proper documentation practice. Thorough archival research, analysis of the structure, the historic materials, and the building chronology was completed during the class, culminating in Section B of an Historic Structure Report.

Cultural Resource Survey – Spottswood-Mercer Neighborhood Data Analysis

As the capstone class to a four-semester series on architectural styles, the chronology of buildings, and their materials, the Survey and Preservation Planning 400-level class embarked on a Cultural Resource Survey of a 15-block area in Fredericksburg, VA. From the initial survey and archival research of the buildings through the compilation and analysis of data, the class worked in teams to assess the site and create both a report and nomination of a National Register Historic District.

Ms. Schricker, among other tasks, completed the SPSS data analysis, wrote the Executive Summary, and overall Data Analysis of the property surveys. She also assisted her teammates in completing maps in Photoshop and doing photography for the report.

Neighborhood History/ Phase 1 Research & Survey

Dovetail LogoWhile employed by Dovetail Cultural Resource Group, Ms. Schricker was tasked with the job of researching, completing fieldwork, and writing the neighborhood history of a project in Winchester, Virginia. Deed research, field survey, and analysis of various historic resources resulted in Ms. Schricker’s contribution to the Phase II Cultural Resource Report.

Ms. Schricker has also participated in a Phase I field survey and the following documentation of resources through site plans, architectural descriptions, and photo documentation.
